Passion & Purity

I’m so excited! I’m reading “Passion & Purity” by Elizabeth Elliot. It’s about the waiting time between her and her husband Jim Elliot (this man’s life makes me want to be more on fire for God). It is so amazing and powerful so far. I think I highlighted the entire first 3 chapters. I’m such a romantic to read the story of how they stayed in God’s will and feel so in love with each other, is that so hard to achieve in this century? God I hope not, I pray that my husband makes some attempt to woo me old school style (letters, sonnets, verses from Songs of Solomon, etc). But what amazes me more is they wanted to please God. They struggled and fought their feelings because they wanted to please God and live a life He had for them. Who does that nowadays? Who says "Thy will be done even though I like him/her so much"? They didn't know their love for God and each other would be a testimony to help and encourage me and so many others. I realize when we go through; we go through so that others will be encouraged when they are also going through or to help some not have to.

Here Comes the Brides!

Today was actually fun! I have a lot of ideas for my cousins wedding (she asked me to be the planner and help her out because I know her like the back of my hand). It is so funny how quickly things are happening. One minute we think boys are ugly and have cooties, the next minute we can’t wait to find our help mate. In the midst of the entire wedding craze and the constantly telling all the vendors at the Expo that I am not a bride but a friend there for support, I found myself at peace with it all. Right now, it’s not my season for a relationship. I am in my winter season; things are dying and cold but it’s a season that must happen so I can get to spring. I know that when its time, its time; but right now I am content. That’s the best way you can be.

I'm Going to Be Honest

The Lord has been dealing with me about a certain area of my life where I can truly say I lack faith in: my love life. I will be brutally honest with you: I have made many mistakes in my past and I don’t feel I should be given anything for it. I mean, I know who God has for me but it feels like I would be more of a hindrance to him that a helpmate. And I realize that thinking is preventing me from moving towards what’s mine. When God told Abraham he would be a Father of many nations and he was extremely old did Abraham say “no God, there seems to be some kind of error”? No. He believed; he didn’t question God or try to figure out God’s plan he just let go and let God. These days we seem to forget that God is still the God that can move mountains, part seas, heal you just on your faith alone. So why do we limit Him to what we can do? God is so much bigger than us, so let us not put Him in a box or try to figure out what His next move is or how we’re getting to our “promise land”.

Sigh.....I think everyone waits for the day that they meet the one that God has planned for them. To be able to say that God has assigned you to be my partner as I continue this walk in Christ has to be an awesome feeling! I see the Youth that are getting married this year and I thank God that they sought Him in their decisions; that they waited on Him for His confirmation. It isn't an easy process, believe me I know. You want to be 100% sure that God is in the relationship and this is who He has for you.....sigh....I wish it was a text book way for everyone but God doesn't work like that. He speaks to us different ways. So as I continue to seek Him and His direction in everything as well as this area; I pray you do the same.

Ashamed to Ask for Help?

I was at intercessory prayer today before it started and did my usual routine: prayed for myself so that I can be in a place to pray for others. I always look at it as this: how can you be effective for others if you're not effective to yourself? After I prayed, I opened my Bible and began to read James 5:13-20. I was amazed by it. I have read this book before but it seems like there is a new light to it today. It talks about prayer, but not just praying; it tells us that if we are in trouble, sick, in a bind, etc. we should go to the elders and be prayed for. Nowadays it seems that we want to deal with our troubles on our own. Why can't we ask for help? Why are we so ashamed of our present situations? It's like some of us would rather starve then tell our brother or sister we're hungry. We aren't perfect; we strive for it each day in CHRIST! We're human; and as humans we will fall constantly. What made this realization even more amazing was my Youth President spoke about showing compassion for your fellow brother and sister in Christ when they fall. He mentioned the story of the adulteress and Jesus when He said "If any one of you is without sin, let him be first to throw a stone..." We, the body of Christ seem to be the ones that show the least amount of compassion towards the sinner, backslider, and the fallen at times. But we need to remember, we were in their situation; we were lost, at a point where we felt we were too far from God. We need to be more like Christ so that when someone is struggling with something, they won't be too afraid to ask for help.

A Romantic-Realist?

I am a total sap in regards to everyone but myself. I can't help but "awww" with everyone else when I see or hear the most adorable and romantic things couples do. But me, the buck stops there. I think I have been around too many guys and that has ruined my idea of romance. I like to call myself a Romantic-Realist. I know you might say that doesn't exist or that it sounds like an oxymoron but I really am one. I believe that romance and all the overly sappy stuff involved should only be expected in romance novels and romantic movies. Only on a rare exception (a very rare) should it be expected in real life, lol. I look at it like this: if you only expect it in fiction you won't be disappointed in real life. Don't you agree? If we really think about the average male and his idea of romance, you will find that nothing on it will match your list. Some men are different. For example, there some guys that actually pay attention to the little things, like hand holding and all the sickening other things, lol. But I have to be the odd ball. I am not a fan of romantic gestures; give me electronics instead of flowers (they last longer), if you want to get me jewelry give me anything but diamonds (they're so boring looking) and if you propose I rather it be when we are just hanging out (I am not a fan of grand, elaborate surprises). So that being said, it's not hard to see that I am not the most romantic person when it comes to real life. I swoon when I read and reread Jane Austen (but that is a totally different story, lol). You know I bet just to show His humor; God is going to pair me with a sweep you off your feet, stare at the stars at night while he's on the phone with you, text you whenever he's "thinking about you" Romantic type of guy. And he might work at me until he breaks me down and turn me into a bunch of mush..... God I hope not! Lol.

Give Me Your Eyes

Every time I get on the train and sit down, I have to close my eyes or read a book. If I don't, I find myself staring at the different people on the train with me. I often wonder what their stories are, where they came from, what they are going through. I always used to hear that there's always someone out there less fortunate than you. What if I was staring right at them? What if the person sitting next to me needed something to eat, money to get home, etc.? How would I know? Would I help? Sometimes I feel like I think too much, that I need to keep my mind occupied so that I won't stress myself out. There's a song I heard a couple of days ago on the radio called "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath. It had me thinking: what if we saw what God saw? Would we show compassion and love? Would we reach out to to those who are lost? Or would we be comfortable in our blinded state? I think to be honest a lot of us including myself; sometimes would chose the latter. We want to help, but sometimes it feels like too much; like they're too many people out there in need and not enough time and/or money. But if each one of us helped one person in need think about the difference it would make?! If we adopted a "Pay it Forward" mentality and each person helped the next person and so on and so on; without expecting a thing, what kind of world would this be?

It's Not About Us

Today I had intercessory prayer at church. I am the only one under 25 that regularly attends it. Sad, I know but true. I was drawn to it over a year ago; I wanted to be the one to intercede on behalf of my family, love ones, friends, the lost, etc. I have been attending it for a while and haven't been called upon to lead a prayer until today. I was asked to lead a prayer on behalf of the youth ( I started sweating bullets, I am still conquering the in front of a crowd thing, lol). I am one of the "youth leaders" because for some reason the youth come to me with the things they won't go to anyone else about. I think its because I am honest about everything with them and I won't judge them. So when I led the prayer I asked God to teach us and show us how to love them ALL and show us how to reach them. Not just the ones who listen and attend Sunday School and Youth Service faithfully, but those who live in an unsaved household, those who come in our doors with tattoos, wild color hair, piercings, those who are hurt and only know how to use anger to deal with their pain. I joined the youth ministry over a year ago as the one of the new youth secretary. It started out as an administrative role but slowly became more. The girls began to see me about questions and problems and the boys would come to me to get a big sister point of view. One of the elderly women told me that God is calling me to work with them because I have been where they have been and I want to help them and bring them to where they need to be. I never looked at it like that before. I always looked at it from the angle of why should they be lost if all they need is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, or even someone to take them shopping? Why can't I be the one to do it? One of my older girlfriends told me that ministry takes on all forms but the definition is the same: ministry is serving others. I hope that I can serve others everyday. Even if it's just when I give my seat on the train/bus for an elderly person or cover my co-workers lunch because they're short on funds, etc. That being said, ask yourself "Am I trying to serve others daily?".

More Caffeine Please!

It's been a month since I had a cup of coffee. So today at work I got my big company cup and filled it to the brim with Starbucks Sumatra and had it with Reese's Peanut Buttercups, and sat in front of my computer and visited my favorite website: Wikipedia. My sisters at church tell me that I'm addicted to caffeine, but I totally disagree. I look at it as an appreciation for the drink. I can stop drinking if I wanted to, really I can. But I don't need to, and I don't want to. I can't wait to have a Starbucks Caramel Macchaito and CRUMBS vanilla with rainbow sprinkles cupcake. I want one so bad!
This morning on my way to work I was listening to Bethany Dillon's self titled debut album (2004). I love her sound! I appreciate all genres of music but lately I have been into acoustic and folk rock. She is such a on fire young woman of God. I had to remind myself that at the time she recorded this album she as only 14! You can hear in her songs that she really loves the Lord. I love all the songs on that album. I first discovered her last year because I was into Colbie Caillat's sound, so I asked the Lord to help me find a Christian artist with a similar acoustic/folk/pop sound. I found something better: Bethany Dillon. I listened to her "So Far: Acoustic Sessions" (2008) album and was hooked! She also has these two love songs called "When You Love Someone" and "For My Love". "For My Love" is on her debut album and its such a beautiful song. I kept playing that song over and over. It had me thinking, this is what love songs should sound like. Love is something that God created to be pure and to show His presence in that relationship. Why? Because God is love, so your relationship should be based on and in God. These days, love is often mistaken by lust. Relationships are built on sex, physical attraction, and what "feels good". But if we let God leads us, its this beautiful experience that starts out as a slow burn and becomes this beautiful passionate relationship as God has intended. Too deep? I think not. Maybe it's the lack of caffeine that has me like this, I think its time for my second cup.

The Power of a Love Letter

I'm an old fashion girl in the sense that if you have something meaningful and/or passionate (not too passionate) to say to me that it should be said in a letter. Don't get me wrong, I want you to say it to my face as well but there is something amazing about making your thoughts and words immortal. Perfect example: I came across a book in Barnes & Noble (during one of my many book runs, I know I need help) called "Love Letters of Great Men" by Ursula Doyle. Not all of them were the most romantic but the fact that they communicated what was on their minds and hearts without fear gets to me. Everytime I watch Persuasion (both versions) I stopped breathing and listen to every word Frederick says to Anne in his letter. For him, that was it. He had to let Anne know everything, it was his last chance. He had no fear.
It brings to mind one of my favorite Bible verses that I always go back to: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18). If Frederick didn't write Anne and let himself dwell on the past and being afraid, we wouldn't have know about their happy ending. If you have God, you have love, and if you have love you can't have fear because God hasn't given us a spirit of fear.
That being said, maybe its time to write a letter. Literally or figuratively. Maybe its time to do something that the Lord has laid on your heart, maybe its time share your testimony with someone who is going through the same thing you have been through. Maybe its time to open your heart to your future helpmate. You never know. If we keep fearing and hiding instead of living and loving the way God has intended for us we will never get anything done. When will you let God write you and love letter or vice versa?
