Madhuri and her men

I think that it is the case with many people when it comes to their favourite Hindi actor/actress to rank the jodis they made in order of preference. And that is exactly what I am going to do in this post. I saw most of the films Madhuri, being my favourite actress, played in. And I have, of course, my own preferences. Of course, she had many co-stars during her iconic career, but I just had to give my TOP 5.
5. Jackie Shroff

What was great with this pairing is that Jackie looked exactly like a man should be, very manly, and although he is not especially handsome, one can easily find him really sexy. They could be sexy and sweet together.

4. Sanjay Dutt

All those who keep saying they had an affair: out! This rumour has been proven wrong MANY times. Anyway - those two still made a great on-screen jodi and could be as well, and as you can see on this picture (from a movie that in the end was not made), hot.

Better than my poor words, here is a sweet song from my favourite Sanjay Dutt/Madhuri movie: Saajan. One of my absolute favourites.

3. Anil Kapoor

Please, don't kill me for this spot when it comes to Anil. I know they were the most iconic jodis up until DDLJ which started the SRKajol mania. But hey, he is still at the number 3 spot. I don't think I need to say much about them. Everybody can guess why their on-screen chemistry was reputed. And it has never been overrated. They created the magic of Tezaab together, they gave innocence to the gangster-movie Parinda, she was his Radha in Ram Lakhan... and through the fourteen movies they did together, their comfort level grew and grew.

My favourite song of theirs must be the magical and dream-like "Kismat se tum" (by the master A.R. Rahman) in Pukar - the last movie they were paired opposite in and the movie they had the greatest chemistry in, IMO.

2. Aamir Khan

Oooooooh, my Dil is sinking, I lost it somewhere and...Na jaane kahan dil kho gaya. Do you know? No? Errm, whatever.

Pity they only made two films together, because damn, they were a great jodi. Just sweet, powerful... And I just love young Aamir. I like him more than the current one, always showing his great business-sense and not giving a bloody kick-ass performance. (You can do it, Aamir!) I need to watch Dil again. Mein jaati hoon....I think I found the song which can tell me where I have lost my dil...

1. Shahrukh Khan

The King, the baadshah... Who else could rock the first place? He is not called the greatest lover for nothing. I have always preferred the jodi he makes with Kajol, but I think Madhuri always looked the best with him, they have an amazing comfort level, and the chemistry... always leaves my heart melting. Ok, they did not have space to have much chemistry in Anjaam (though they were both amazing ), unfortunately played in this bad and nauseous B-grade movie Koyla, but they were the only saving grace of a shallow movie like Dil To Pagal Hai, really looked like a married couple in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, and I could feel Chandramukhi's love for Devdas, and the latter's attraction to the golden-hearted courtesan as if I was living it... Ok, and because this is them, not one but two videos tribute to their amazing chemistry.

Aaaah their performance in the last Filmfare awards was sheer magic...

Who do you prefer Madhuri with?

Deewana Mastana

Directed by David Dhawan
Starring: Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Johnny Lever
Released: 1997
My Rating: 5/10

Raja (Anil Kapoor) and his friend Ghafoor (Johnny Lever) are crooks who sell train-tickets on the black market in Amripur Station. One day, with the help of a corrupted police-inspector, they rob Rs 2.5 millions from the railway treasury. After bumping off the very inspector, free and rich, they run to Bombay. There they meet the beautiful Neha (Juhi Chawla), a psychiatrist, and within little time, Raja falls in love with her. But he needs to win her trust and friendship first...

Meanwhile, Dr. Neha gets a new patient, Bunnu (Govinda) who is afraid of (almost) everything. As he feels better and better, he also falls in love with Neha and soon finds a fierce rival in Raja... There starts many twists orchestrated by both Raja and Bunnu to win Neha's heart.

Joyful Bunnu
I expected a simple and entertaining movie. The first hour was rather pleasant and enjoyable, thanks to the pleasant screen presence of Juhi Chawla. She is an actress whose happiness and joy on screen show. But a little before the intermission, she slowly "disappears" to leave place to Govinda and Anil Kapoor.

B E A U T I F U L !
This is where the film starts to be annoying. The jokes are "funny" in the first half, but it really gets boring and repetitive by the intermission. And the performances do not help to make the whole less annoying. Johnny Lever proves he is a side-kick who should be watched with moderation. I think he was given too much screen-space. Anil is, by no means, funny, and soon becomes cringeworthy, almost as much as Johnny Lever. Govinda is the only one, when it comes to the male leads, to give an enjoyable performance, and he was really sweet, but his character Bunnu soon reveals himself to be as much a looser as Raja.

Anil being............ RIDICULOUS!

The plot is rather predictable. By the last thirteen minutes, you know what is going to happen. But still this is a movie which is not boring at all (even if you cringe at some of the jokes) and there are some good scenes. I have to mention the scene between Bunnu and Raja, when they try to convince the other to let go of Neha and when plenty of cinematic mentions are done, from Rangeela to Hum Aapke Hain Kaun without forgetting Dilip Kumar's Devdas all made in a great way. I am a Hindi-cinema obsessed lover, and I adore mentions of such classic and cult movies in films, they are always welcome.

The music is lovely and some tracks will stay in your mind a little, but it is not unforgettable. It is typical 90s-ish music, but still very pleasant to the ears. One I have to mention O mummy mummy o daddy daddy, not the song in itself (the lyrics are funny indeed) but the picturization is memorable, thanks to Govinda. He is a great dancer, his enjoyment and expressions are priceless, that is why I love watching him dance so much.

To sum up, Deewana Mastana is a cringeworthy movie, with jokes falling flat by the end of the first half. Watch it if you are a Govinda or Anil Kapoor fan, but if you cannot stand Johnny Lever too much, avoid.

The Tale of Two Sisters: Sonam & Rhea Kapoor

Rhea Kapoor Reveals Some Secrets About Sonam and Herself.

Rhea With Sis Sonam Kapoor

One is obsessed about food, the other about fashion. One doesn't mind showing her dirty feet and hates makeup, the other is glamorous. They are two young Bollywood sisters who seem as different as chalk from cheese, and yet, Rhea and Sonam Kapoor share not just clothes but also space. "Sonam and I share each other's clothes a lot. Her style is a little more glamorous. I like simpler things. But she always takes my things," Rhea, 23, who has produced the movie Aisha that stars 25-year-old Sonam, told IANS.

"You know how girls always need pieces to mix and match everything. I buy only those things...jackets and plain pants. And Sonam buys ridiculous things; she obviously can't wear a ridiculous thing and go for coffee. So she just takes my things all the time," said Rhea.

"But thank god we don't have the same foot size. I am 37 and she is 39. She is like giant, so she can't take my shoes," she added with a bout of laughter.

Unlike Sonam, Rhea likes to sit with her legs on the sofa and is not bothered about what her hair looks like. She "hates" makeup and hasn't visited a parlour for a manicure since a year.

"I haven't done a manicure in a year. I don't like people touching my hands. My feet are not even pedicured...I randomly clean them," Rhea said while raising her right foot to show her dirty feet.

"Sonam is obsessed with spas; she loves getting her nails done and stuff. She always wants me to go to a parlour with her. For her Saawariya premiere...she told me - 'You're not coming to the premiere with these cuticles; they look disgusting!' " said Rhea.

Nevertheless, Rhea too is quite stylish. She also opts for the best of high street fashion labels and likes to mix and match them with her mother's jewellery.

But more than fashion, it's food that Rhea is obsessed with.

"I am obsessed about food. I constantly eat. My whole focus is always on food. I can't wear skirts and shorts any more because my legs are so heavy. I haven't gone to a gym in a long time. Every move of mine revolves around my next meal. I plan my whole day according to my food," Rhea says.

However, Rhea calls Sonam a "junkie".

"Sonam is not like me when it comes to eating. She is more of a junk addict. She eats every sort of junk...chips, chocolate, biscuits...give her a book and one packet of Hide & Seek biscuits...it will be over in seven minutes. But I am a proper foodie...I need my appetizers, soup, meal and desserts," she reveals.

Meanwhile, Rhea has plans to take over production from her father, veteran actor Anil Kapoor.

"I am going to take over from dad. There are some interesting, really fun projects that I am working on. But obviously my whole focus is on Aisha right now," she says.

Rhea, who was assistant director in Wake Up Sid, says direction might be an option for her in future.

"I want to direct, but there's still a lot of time for it. It is just too much responsibility to direct a project and I am too young and immature for it. All I know is after working on Wake Up Sid and Aisha, there's no way in hell that I want to act," she says.

And why is that?

"When you grow up with a father who is an actor and a sister who is an actress, it's not a faraway thing. I know the realities of being an actress. I know what it's like to be an actor and I don't want to do it. That's all.

"And especially after I worked on Wake Up Sid, I found the whole process of being behind the camera very interesting. Besides, I am too much of a control freak to just say my lines and go away. Nah! No acting for me," she concludes.

Aisha, based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, is scheduled for an Aug 6 release.

Anil Kapoor's Daughter Rhea Kapoor is Daddy's Girl!

First time producer Rhea Kapoor wears her star genes like an overcoat over her easy confidence.

You don’t need reminding that Rhea Kapoor is Anil Kapoor’s daughter. Even if you don’t connect the dimpled chin and lush lashes, you can’t miss the actor as he hovers over the photographer telling him which angle is good and then bullies him into deleting the ones he disapproves - his tenor, bombastic game show host-cross-over-actor-like. Not to be confused with the tapori Anil Kapoor of Hifazat and Laadla.

Anil Kapoor's Second Daughter Rhea Kapoor

“I don’t know how it feels not to be Anil Kapoor’s daughter,” says the middle offspring, lounging over a couch, head on her hand. “I was born this way,” Rhea says with a laugh.

At the helm of the Anil Kapoor Films, she’s the producer behind the Emma adaptation Aisha, starring elder sister Sonam and Abhay Deol.

For a first-time producer and at 23, she’s mellow and sharp; and at ease with comparisons with famous family members - glancing at a picture taken at a low angle she exclaims, “I look like Sanjay Kapoor! Delete that!”

“Isn’t the dream to take over the family business?” she asks. “This is my family business! People tell me I have it easy because Anil Kapoor is my father. I say, ‘If your father ran a steel mill, wouldn’t you run it too?’” A self-confessed papa’s girl, she recounts many a birthday when she would refuse to cut the cake unless her father was present.

“In so many birthday pictures, you’ll see dad in make-up and costume, having rushed from a shooting,” she guffaws. “He wasn’t around so much when we were growing up. He’s done a hundred films you know.

Lately, he’s realised he hasn’t spent enough time with us and is trying to catch up. And we have to tell him to go away!”

Life’s been an easy transition so far. She’s from the first batch of Dhirubhai Ambani School, and followed it up with theatre in New York University.

In New York she caught the vintage bug, shopping at thrift stores, and passed it on to her family. Conversation with these Kapoor sisters cannot veer far from fashion.

As the team discussed the characters of Aisha, they drew up mood boards, visualising what each person’s wardrobe that would define their character. And then Rhea went shopping to New York.

“Aisha (Sonam) is a mix between Audrey Hepburn and American socialite Olivia Palermo,” she explains. “Pinky Bose (Ira Dubey) is the Manish Arora girl - she celebrates fashion and doesn’t think twice before wearing really outrageous pieces. Abhay is a preppy (Christian) Dior boy.”

The understanding of the synthesis of costume and character is very integral to both the girls. So much so that she roped in the fashion house of Christian Dior to be a part of the project.

Shouldn’t acting be on the cards? “My brother is a complete hero,” she says speaking of Harshvardhan. “He loves taking photographs and all that. I can’t imagine sitting for hours in the make-up chair or waiting for the shot to get ready. This is it for me, for the time being. As a producer, I can’t pass the blame of a bad film on to anyone else.

And yet I have to not interrupt the creative flow. It’s easy to get involved in the minutiae of the film and try to control everything. But then I have to step back and look at the big picture and see whether fighting over a tiny detail is going to affect it.”

She’s very clear that she’s not looking to make heavy, intellectual movies that vie for international acclaim. “Even fun, commercial films can have a soul. Look at Three Idiots. I want to make films that have a soul,” she says.

Brownie points for not saying, “Hatke.”

Interview of Anil Kapoor's 2nd Daughter Rhea Kapoor, Talks About Her Experiences as Producer of Aisha

When Rhea Kapoor returned from the New York University after completing her four-year graduation programme in dramatic literature, she decided it was time to “experience Bollywood”.

Rhea Kapoor (R) with Older Sister Sonam Kapoor (L) at a Party

“I had organised all sorts of theatre productions — from Shakespeare to contemporary drama — during my undergraduate years, but had never worked on a film set. So after returning to Mumbai, I thought it would be fun trying my hand in that field,” she says nonchalantly. Rhea, who debuts as a producer with Rajshree Ojha’s Aisha, might not be as much in the news as her elder sibling Sonam, but the buzz around actor Anil Kapoor’s second daughter is definitely on the rise.

The film is a home production and has Sonam Kapoor pitched opposite Abhay Deol in the lead. Rhea admits first-up she was almost conned into believing that her father would hand-hold her through her first project. “I thought I could manage on my own, but I didn’t want to start off with a home production. But dad convinced me and told me he would be around to guide me through. Then within a few months he left for LA to shoot for the television series 24, leaving me in the lurch. Thanks to my associate producers I was able to pull up my socks and get my stuff together. And can you believe it, I haven’t screwed up!” she grins.

Prior to Aisha Rhea had done her homework though. She assisted Ayan Mukherjee in his debut film Wake Up Sid, where she “observed and understood what happened on a film set.”

Aisha’s story, which is the Indian cinematic adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Emma, is set in contemporary Delhi. Aisha, played by Sonam, like Emma, loves to meddle in everyone’s love affairs with the intention of fixing matches.

“When the script was narrated to me, I was chuckling away. I had read the novel in school and did not remember much of it, but I could only visualise Sonam playing Aisha,” she says.

Working on a project with a sibling expectedly turned out to be a ball. “You need to strike a balance between being a professional and a sibling. But of course, it’s more of an advantage since you already have a great rapport and know what works best,” she adds.

For all the fun she had on the sets, acting, says Rhea is certainly not her thing. “As kids we would accompany dad on outdoor shoots during vacations but would mostly wander off to shop or just fool around. I cannot imagine myself acting ever. It is too stressful. But production, for some reason, seems right. Once I started reading scripts, I realised I would be better off at it,” she shrugs.

The film, which is shot largely in Delhi (45 days schedule) with few schedules in Rishikesh and Mumbai, is rumoured to have a lumpsome investment in the costumes for the cast. There are as many as 80 costume changes for Sonam’s character with 50-odd ones for others in the film. “The high-street labels are in keeping with the social status of the characters. Both Sonam and I love clothes. I would accompany the stylists to New York and upgrade my wardrobe in the process,” she giggles.

Anil Kapoor's Daughter Rhea To Work as Assistant Director on Their Home Production Aisha Starring Sister Sonam

Anil Kapoor's film comes first for daughter Rhea, Sonam's sister chose to work as AD on their home production Emma over KJo movie

Anil Kapoor With Daughter Rhea

When Anil Kapoor's younger daughter Rhea Kapoor wanted to get work experience behind the camera, he suggested she join Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

The actor talked to K-Jo sometime last year, who welcomed her into his company.

Rhea began assisting Ayaan Mukherjee who's directing Wake Up Sid for Dharma Productions. However, six months on, she's no longer with the under-production film.

More exposure, please!

The Kapoor girl, will now assist papa Kapoor with his home production starring Sonam a desi remake of Jane Austen's Emma.

A source reveals, "Rhea is very passionate about filmmaking. She has studied filmmaking abroad and follows world cinema closely.

She learned a lot while assisting Ayaan on Wake Up Sid but felt there were too many assistants and wanted more exposure.

She left halfway through the film and is now involved with Anil Kapoor Productions." At the moment, Sonam's sibling is doing a recce for the film's location and other production details.

Fast learner

Anil Kapoor admits, "Yes, Rhea is now involved with our home production. She feels she has the necessary experience.

She is a fast learner and has picked up the ropes while working in Karan's production house. Unlike Sonam, she is not interested in working in front of the camera."

While Anil Kapoor's elder daughter Sonam's an actress, son Harsh is a director-to-be (is learning scripting and directing in LA presently) and now Rhea will run the production house.

Rib him about having all the talent at home and he laughs, "It wasn't planned like that. It's just where their interests lay. I encouraged them to follow their interests."
