Shekhar Suman to Produce Film Starring Son Adhyayan and Himself

Ghar ki baat hai
Shekhar Suman, son Adhyayan and his ladylove Kangana to star in a home production
Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman and Kangana Ranaut.

About time

Says Shekhar, "It's about time I took the plunge. And I have only Mahesh Bhatt Saab to thank for it. If it wasn't for my son Adhyayan's talent, I wouldn't be tempted to produce a film. And if it wasn't for Bhatt Saab who spotted the talent and cast my son in Raaz 2 and Jashan, I wouldn't have known how talented my son is."

The film, that goes on the floors in the middle of the year, won't star the father and son Suman in their real-life roles. "I think casting me and Addy as father and son would be too much of a predictable and gimmicky cliché. I've instead come up with this brilliant script that casts Adhyayan as the young heir of an empire and I plau his mentor-friend."

For you, dad!

Shekhar Suman plays a surgeon, a role his doctor-father in real life wanted him to assume before Shekhar became an actor. "My father who's a retired surgeon in Patna was scandalised when his honhaar son decided to become an actor. "Now is my father's chance to see his son as a doctor," he chortles.

The big news beyond the family film is that Adhyayan's girlfriend Kangana Ranaut is also expected to be part of the project. "There's a very pivotal role of Adhyayan's girlfriend which I'd like to offer to Kangana. I don't see why she'd refuse. She should accept it not because of her relationship with Addy but because of what the role is," says Shekhar dryly.

The idea of turning director was playing on Shekhar's mind for some time. "It's a natural progession for me. But it was my son's screen presence that helped me make up my mind."

Adhyayan Suman With Dad Shekar Suman

Read on to Know what dad Shekar Suman thinks about son Adhyayan's debut film

'Adhyayan has been cheated'- Shekar Suman
Shekhar Suman is angry with producer Kumar Mangat and director Anil Devgan for reducing his son Adhyayan's role to a guest appearance in his debut film, Haal-E-Dil.Says Shekhar, "Adhyayan has been cheated.

He didn't get a chance to prove himself with his one-and-a-half scene and two-song role. I blindly trusted Kumar Mangat because I thought he had made a powerful and wonderful film like Omkara. Now I've realised that it was Vishal Bhardwaj and not Mangat who made Omkara. Mangat only made a film like 123.

"Shekhar adds, "When Mangat approached Adhyayan, we thought it would be his dream debut. I didn't even read the script and neither did Adhyayan. That was our mistake.

"Shekhar says though he has had over a decade of experience in the wily ways of the industry. they still "trusted Mangat blindly. I thought it was his daughter, Amita's debut so he wouldn't shortchange my son. I didn't even watch the rushes as I don't want to be perceived as an interfering father. At the film's premiere, my wife Alka and I were aghast!"

Shekhar says he had an inkling of what was happening when Adhyayan was shooting for a song in Ladakh. "Adhyayan asked for a full script for the first time. After he saw it, Adhyayan called me and cried like a baby.

He said, 'Dad, I have no role. I want to walk out!' Adhyayan was told at the beginning that he was to be the male lead. Instead, they made Nakuul the lead and my son was reduced to a character actor. In spite of the injustice done to Adhyayan, I told him to stick around as it would be unethical to back out on a producer halfway."

Blame game
Adds Shekhar, "I don't know whom to blame Mangat or director Anil Devgan. So many producers from Tips to Sunil Shetty and Mahesh Bhatt found Adhyayan promising and had wanted to launch him. Mahesh Bhatt, who has an uncanny knack of discovering talent, wanted to sign Adhyayan for three films. Adhyayan's next will be a solo lead with the Bhatts. It's a Rs 20 crore deal and the role of a lifetime."

Has Shekhar expressed his displeasure to Mangat? "I haven't but I will. I won't fire or abuse him but will tell him that 'I trusted you and you committed a breach of trust. You let me down.' Twice Adhyayan postponed important schedules of Raaz 2 in which he is acting because Mangat wanted to have media meets.

I am the last person to interfere but today I want to ask Mangat why was he wasting Adhyayan's time and using Shekhar Suman's name to promote his film when he wasn't even there in the film?"

Shekhar has learnt his lesson. He vows, "From now on, I will not trust anyone even my instincts. I will listen to Adhyayan's scripts and teach him how to deal with them till he learns. I have realised that a good production house, director and technical team are most important. For Adhyayan, Haal-E-Dil was an internship. Raaz 2 will be his launchpad!"

Shekhar on Kangana and Adhyayan
"Aditya Panscholi's insinuations on Kangana and Adhyayan are very unfortunate and baseless. I can't understand why we are being dragged into this. When the rumours of a link-up between Adhyayan and Kangana started, I did ask him if it was true. He said, 'Dad, no way! I have a girlfriend and it's the last thing I want to be dragged into as I am focusing on my career.' Adhyayan's so young and impressionable.

I was angry initially angry with Aditya's allegations but later, I laughed it off. Kangana is not our bahu, nor is Adhyayan getting married in the next 10 years! It wasn't necessary for Aditya to drag our family into such a mess without knowing the truth."

Adhyayan Suman With Parents Shekhar Suman and Alka

Shekhar has acted in almost 30 films. He married Alka (Kapoor), on May 4, 1984 after a two year courtship. They have a son, Adhyayan. Adhyayan will soon ne making his debut in Bollywood with the film Haal-e-dil directed by Anil Devgan and produced by Kumar Mangat.

The couple lost their eldest son, Aayush, in whose memory Shekhar is constructing a hospital in Patna

Adhyayan Suman With Co-stars of Haal-e-dil Nakuul Mehta and Amita Pathak

Adhyayan Suman, son of versatile actor-singer-anchor Shekhar Suman, Amita Pathak, daughter of producer Kumar Mangat of Big Screen Entertainment and Nakuul Mehta, another starry-eyednewbie, are all set to make their combined debuts in Mangat’s new-age film Haal-e-dil(State of the heart) due for release mid-June – and the film is not a romantic triangle!

Adhyayan Suman, (he plays Rohit who will do anything for the girl he loves), is by leagues the most intense of the lot, giving the impression of a pent-up fireball of energy.“Rohit transforms from being a love less rich boy into a serious and mature human being,”he says.“I landed this film by accident but couldn’t have asked for a better debut! For one,the script is brilliant and very different, and two, Kumar Mangatji is not going to leave anystone unturned in promoting his daughter’s debut film!”Adhyayan straightened his hair once at his hairstylist Perry’s salon in Mumbai and was walking out when Ajay Devgan walked in and noticed him.“We passed each other but I never knew that he had noticed me. Half-an-hour later, Kumar Mangat called me up.” Adhyayan’s background and training (“Everything I did from my school days was aimed at becoming an actor!”) makes him approach characters realistically. He preempts the query of how he intends to stand out among so many new star-kids and other new entrants with a “I dont think of competition. It takes focus away from work and hard work is always rewarded sooner or later!”

‘I’m taken seriously despite my age’ - Adhyayan Suman

He’s Shekhar Suman’s son and making his debut with Haal-e-Dil. It helps, but you need a lot more, says Adhyayan

AVISIT to a hair salon changed Adhyayan’s life forever. He was spotted by Ajay Devgan who recommended him to the producer of Haal-e-Dil, Kumar Mangat. “I went to Peri’s salon for a haircut. He suggested that I get my hair straightened. I said, ‘There’s no way I’m wasting three hours on that.’ But he wouldn’t listen, so I gave in. Half-an-hour after I left, I got a call from Mangat’s office calling me for a screen test. So I advise every Bollywood aspirant to visit Peri’s salon,” laughs the newcomer.

The film also launches Nakul Mehta and Kumar’s daughter Amita Pathak. And there’s speculation about who the male lead is. “Both of us are leads. There’s no second lead. And even if people write that I’m the third or fourth lead, it won’t bother me. I know I’m in safe hands,” says Adhyayan. So what about reports of a showdown with Nakul? “We’re great friends,” asserts Adhyayan. With his father ruling the small screen for decades, didn’t he ever want to get into television? “I always wanted to be in films, so did my father. But he didn’t have time on his side. I’ll do television. Not a soap, but maybe anchoring. I know I won’t be able to do even five per cent of what my father does, but I’ll try,” says Adhyayan.

And what about comedy, which his father is an ace at? “I’ll do comedy later. I think I’ve inherited my father’s funny bone. I’m always cracking jokes and playing pranks on the sets.” he says.

His next film is Mohit Suri’s Raaz 2 in which he plays a documentary filmmaker. “To get a role like this in my second film is exciting; I have a two-film contract with Mohit,” he says.
Barely a film old, and he’s already getting multi-film contracts from production houses. “A lot of corporate houses that have signed big directors approached me. There was buzz around me right from the time I started doing my first film,” he says.” Is that too much too soon? After all, he’s only 20. Adhyayan says, “I’m taken seriously despite my age. People ask me why I don’t behave like a 20-year-old. I never expected to get into films at such a young age. Initially my dad asked, ‘Are you sure?’ But later he understood.”

Adhyayan agrees that being Shekhar Suman’s son is advantageous. “Even the heavyweights are only a phone call away. I don’t have to wait in line to meet Yash Chopra. It’s important to have a godfather, but ultimately, you need to be talented,” he remarks.

As for reports suggesting that his mum was upset with him dating an older woman, Adhyayan says, “I don’t have a girlfriend. Right now, it’s only about work. The girl in question is a friend. It’s true that she’s elder to me, but mom doesn’t have a problem with her. People saw me talking to her, alone, in a corner at Manish Malhotra’s show, and thought we’re having a scene.”

Adhyayan Suman remembers dead brother Aayush

Pic: For you, bro! Adhyayan with parents

Adhyayan Suman spoke about his dead brother at the music launch of his debut vehicle

The music launch of Haal-e-Dil saw debutant Adhyayan Suman getting emotional and remembering his deceased elder brother, Aayush and how he always felt his presence about him.

Adhyayan, who lost his brother at the tender age of seven remembered him on his big day. Adhyayan gave a short speech, which touched everyone present there.

Aayush ki yaad...

A source present reveals, “Adhyayan thanked God for giving him the opportunity. Getting a little emotional, he also thanked his elder brother who was no longer with him. Aayush had died at age 11 of a heart defect.

At that time, Shekhar Suman was not financially well off and couldn’t afford an expensive operation. Adhyayan added that Aayush always watches and looks after him and saves him from all the trouble. Choking on his tears, he took a pause, and continued with his speech thereafter thanking Mangatji and Anil Devgan and wishing all he luck to his co-stars.”

“Adhyayan is only 20 years old but showed a lot of maturity. A lot of people consider him to be arrogant, but this speech really changed everyone’s opinion about him,” adds the source.

Adhyayan says, “I was very young (he was seven at the time) when I lost my brother. When I saw him, I had no idea what was happening. As time passed, I realised that today whatever good is happening to me is because I feel he had his hand on me.”

Why didn’t he mention his parents anywhere? He says, “While I was talking about my brother I was getting very emotional and speaking about my parents would have surely got me into tears. I didn’t want that to happen.”

He further adds, “The moment I got on to the stage, I saw my parents, their eyes beaming with pride. I thank them every moment for where I am and would wish to have them as my parents every time I take birth.”

Shekhar Suman's Son, Adhyayan Suman

Shekhar Suman talks about Son, Adhyayan

On Adhyayan Joining Films
In know Adhyayan wanted to be an actor ever since he was a kid. So we sent him to London to pursue Theater and media studies. After that he also did a course in Film direction at the New York film academy. It is important for him to debut in a good film. He got a good break in Kumar Mangat’s Hale Dil. He has also signed 2 films with Mohit Suri. He got his offers at 19, even before I could plan a launch for him. I am sure that in future I will direct him in my own film. Money should be secondary at the start of one’s career. He is lucky in that sense. When I started off I was in need of money, but Adhyayan can say no to a lot of projects without thinking about money

What’s your son saying about your six-pack?
Adhyayan keeps saying, ‘Watch out dad, I’m catching up’. He says that he is tired of people telling him that his dad looks like his brother.

He will soon be venturing into the acting world?
He is 19 and I think, he has all the trappings of a great actor. Adhyayan is debuting with Kumar Mangat’s Hal E Dil opposite Mangat’s daughter Amita. He has Raaz 2 by Mohit Suri and another Rs 20 to Rs 30 crore venture to be directed by Suri.

Will you be recommending him?
He doesn’t need any recommendations. Maybe, he will recommend me.

Adhyayan Suman talks about his passion - films

Since childhood, I wanted to become an actor. So I prepared myself well before venturing out and signing films. Acting is my passion and I want to do it for ever. And yes, I want to direct films once I turn 30. Until then I want to act.
